Saukonlaituri housing

Honorable mention, Helsinki Townhouse competition. Helsinki City Planning Department commissioned our office based on the competition later.

The block consists of blocks of flats and townhouse units in between them. The number of floors varies from three to eight so that the eastern building with a side-corridor is the highest of the block. The facades facing the streets, the channel and Saukonlaituri form an unified surface that conceals a series of triangular squares and a green gathering courtyard. Higher and lower buildings are interlaced so that the lighting inside the block meets the competition's requirements well. There are views overlooking the sea from the street side apartments too. All apartments located on the ground floor have got their own private entries either to the street, to the pier or to a triangular square. The courtyard forms a green room-like space and a series of coppices, hills and dells inside the block. Playgrounds are situated under the trees by the routes piercing the courtyard.

A city plan proposal made according to the reference plan was accepted by the City Planning Department in December 2010.
