Latokartano comprehensive school

Invited competition, honorary mention.

The City of Helsinki arranged in 2005 an invited competition for a new school in the Latokartano housing area. One of the main themes was ”natural ventilation”

The shape of the building reflects the functional concept. Clarity, easy orientation and the demand for natural ventilation were decisive issues.

The grand hall with adjacent library form the spatial backbone of the building and the main areas for social interaction. The atriums have different features depending on their orientation. The ones facing north represent the ”wild conifer belt” while the south facing ones show the nature and garden culture of a warmer zone.
