As.Oy Helsingin Sinfonia

The art-deco style brick building, originally completed in 1931 for the educational purposes, has been redesigned for residential use along with a new extension.

The monumental building was originally designed by architect Väinö Vähäkallio. From 1982 to 2019, it housed the Sibelius Academy. Our office was responsible for the reference planning and zoning consultation required for the renovation, as well as for building permit and implementation planning.

The brick building consists of a 6-story main wing located at the end of Dunckerinkatu and a 4-story wing reminiscent of a factory building, which dominates the lush courtyard of the Töölö district. The original building is protected by the zoning plan and is located in a nationally significant unified built cultural environment (RKY Taka-Töölö apartment district). The preservation decision places special emphasis on the protection of the building’s interior spaces.
