Karviaistie housing

Winner of the Invitational Competition Organized by the City of Helsinki’s Housing Production

A-Konsultit and Talli’s proposal “Metsä Puilta” has won the invitational competition organized by the City of Helsinki’s housing production for the transformation of the Karviaistie 12 apartment block complex.

The competition focused on an eight-building complex owned by the City of Helsinki’s Housing Company, dating back to 1977, consisting of 3-4-story concrete element apartment buildings in Malmi. The task was to redesign the building facades and add two additional floors, making extensive use of timber construction.

The winning proposal combines the best features of the existing block with environmentally conscious timber construction, following the principle that “simple is sustainable, and thus beautiful.” This solution represents excellent everyday building with high-quality execution and beautiful details elevated. The Karviaistie project is a good example of an area where it is possible to make a shift towards better living, more sustainable construction, and reduced material consumption.

Our proposal focuses on the idea that the least burdening building for the Earth is the one that lasts the longest. Buildings are constructed using proven construction methods and durable materials. The purpose of the proposal is to create a comfortable and long-lasting living environment while also supporting and increasing awareness of biodiversity.
